True Life of the Soul

“By your steadfastness and patient endurance you shall win the true life of your souls.”
~ Luke 21:19

A soldier trains for the battle field. Similarly a runner is trained by his coach for the race of his life. Each spends hours, months and years in training so they can win. They are willing to endure hardship, suffer and keep away from things that can shake their focus only for this purpose.

We too have a battle to fight and a race to win. It is the race for the life of our soul! During our lifetime we will have to learn a lot of things, suffer for doing what is right and keep our focus on the things that God wants so that we can win the battle for our soul.

Satan knows the true value of our soul, after all Jesus our Savior died on the cross for it! Satan will always aim to throw us off the course, but we can through our steadfastness to God and our patience during difficult times overcome these obstacles from him.

Let us not fret when there are bad and difficult times. We need to remember that even in the worst of times, God can and will work out something good for us for He said, ‘All things work together for good for those who love the Lord.”

Hold on and don’t give up! Keep trusting in the Lord and He will come through for you!

Prayer:
Dear Jesus, forgive me for not having the right attitude towards hardships in my life. Help me Lord to overcome and be victorious in every area of my life, Amen.

Our Perspective of God

‘But now, this is what the LORD says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. ‘ ~ Isaiah 43:1

Many things influence our perspective and understanding of God. Somehow more than the good things that happen in our life, its the bad negative things that seem to linger on with haunting questions seeking a satisfying answer. We look at the situation, the circumstantial cause and effects, at our own inadequacies and weakness and yet find it easier to blame God for the entire predicament. Disappointments, discouragements and failures seem to constrict our view of God. Regrets and missed opportunities push us to the brink of frustration and we wonder “Is God really there!”

It had been along time now since the promise was given. Abraham and Sarah were getting along in years. And they had not yet had a child. “The LORD has kept me from having children” she concluded. Frustrated and desperate to get on with life, she decided to take the matter in her own hands and devised a plan of her own making. Hagar, the Egyptian maidservant would be of help to build up the family.

How are things with you? Is there some difficulty or problem that seems to cut short the joy of knowing the LORD through the time of waiting? Has your life been reduced to a lifeless conveyor-  belt kind of existence? Have crushing circumstances come down so heavily making you to just shut God out of your world? It may seem so, but God is still out there to watch over you and sustain you. God was faithful to fulfill the given promise. Isaac was born. The promised land was captured by the descendents of Abraham. All peoples of the earth have been blessed for the Saviour of the world was born from Abraham’s line.

Hold on and have faith in God. It will pay off someday.

Prayer – “Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the way you have created me with much thought and care and endowed me with so many blessings. Forgive me for being cynical and arrogant. Help me live a truly surrendered life to you in every way. Amen.”

Before the World Began

‘He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake’ ~ 1 Peter 1:20

When we are faced with the ‘first time’ thing like going on a voyage or a long distance travel, making a deal on selling the car or buying a house, seeking an alliance or entry into a business venture, setting up an office or even having the first baby, we all seek the helpful counsel of those already been through that journey. We rely on their experience and trust the sound advice they give.   No doubt we all feel so relieved to meet someone whose already been there before and knows all the ups and downs, the unexpected turns on the road, the hurdles and challenges, the stress and strain, the tears and sighs, the loss and gain and everything put together. Hearing them share their story opens our eyes to valuable truths and key principles that were hitherto obscure. We learn to build on their faith and reach higher.

We all live our earthly life only once and die once. Hebrews 9:27 says, ‘…people are destined to die once..’ And no human being can assure us that life is going to be all good and rosy.  But Christ is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. He knows the end from the beginning. Before man was, he was there. He knows all about life and its complexities. He understands all about man and his frailty. He remembers that we are dust and has pity on us. He offers to help us not just make it through life but be over-comers, more than conquerors and live an abundant life. All we need to do is ask him. And then when he shows us the way, we have to follow. 2 Timothy 1:9 says, ‘He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.’

A beautiful song often sung in worship is – “Above all powers, above all kings, above all nature and all created things, Above all wisdom and all the ways of man, you were here before the world began.’ Absolutely magnanimous that Jesus was there even before the world began, before time began and even before you and I were created and placed in our mother’s womb. This is so comforting to know! So if you don’t know Jesus, get to know him personally by reading the Bible and talking to those who believe in him. Your life will be different!

Prayer – “Dear Heavenly Father, I’m amazed at your glory, majesty and splendour. Indeed there is no one else like you. There is no Saviour apart from you. I worship you and adore you. I give my life to you, lead me on. Amen.”

God’s Instructions to Abraham

‘…I no longer live, but Christ lives in me ‘ ~ Galatians 2:20

There are three important instructions that God gave to Abraham. Firstly, God told him – “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.” Secondly, after Lot seperated from him, God said, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever….Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.” Thirdly, when Abraham was ninety nine years old, God appeared again and said, “I am God Almighty, walk before me faithfully and be blameless…This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised. You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you.”

These clear instructions came as part of the journey that took him out of his home and into the unknown unexplored land, made him to travel extensively  and finally partake of a covenant by circumcision at the gae of ninety nine.

There came one greater than Abraham, who left his heavenly abode and all the glory above, was born into this world, travelled extensively throughout Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria and finally became the mediator of a new covenant by the offering of his own life as a sacrifice for our sins – Christ the LORD!

Your journey in following Christ will call for choices that must be made at different levels. Some will touch the outside of your world, there will be changes in social settings. Some will require you to cope with changes in total life-settings. Some will touch upon the ‘inside’ of you – your will and  your identity. How far are you willing to go?

Prayer – “Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for your great love for me. Help me yield myself to you completely and live a life that is fully surrendered to you alone. Amen.”

A Personal Note

‘This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him’ ~ 1 John 4:9
God works in mysterious ways indeed. His ways are beyond our understanding. Above the plans and pursuits of man, God’s hand carries forth his sovereign will transcending time and space, even in the lives of seemingly insignificant people. Onesimus is one such life touched by the hand of God. A runaway slave, his name means ‘useful’. But he proved to be otherwise to his master, Philemon, a believer in Colosse. Deserting his master, he ran away to Rome, hoping for better prospects in life.

While he had his eye on the city, God had his eye on him. By divinely orchestrated situations, Onesimus finds himself meeting Paul who was under house arrest in Rome. This divine meeting opened the doorway of salvation in Onesimus’ life. But life did not turn out to be a bed of roses. The gnawing guilt of the past was a reality he had to deal with. But he did not have to do it all alone, for God was with him. God had divinely appointed for the apostle Paul to reconcile Onesimus back to his master, Philemon whom Paul already knew so well. So the letter was written, a personal note requesting the welcome of a runaway slave.

We are no different from Onesimus. We too have wronged God by our sinful ways, wrong attitudes, rebellion, laziness, disobedience and unwillingness to let go off our own pursuits. The past of our lives is all messed up. Turning away from its distressful gloom, we run away trying to hide under the cover of  a smile, a calendar checkered with schedules, or putting on the garb of hyperactivity, even buying gifts for others and being overtly kind to get into ‘good books’ creating a good impression. But God has sent his personal note to us in Christ Jesus, a personal note of love and mercy. He came as the one sent from God to deliver us from the power of sin and death. Christ reconciled us back to God by shedding his blood on the cross for our wrong doing. Christ offers peace that no else can give, and strength to deal with the past by receiving the forgiveness of sins that comes by believing in Christ alone.

No life is insignificant to God, even that of a slave. He loves everyone and is concerned that all must come to repentance through Jesus and receive eternal life (2 Peter 3:9). Are you willing to open your heart and receive God’s love through Jesus? You can do so and enjoy peace and strength for all days of your life, including your past. For Christ has dealt with it.

Prayer – “Dear Heavenly Father, thank you so much for your personal note of love for me sent through Jesus Christ. I accept him as my Savior and Lord. Thank you for the peace and strength I find in you alone to help me live all the days of my life. I bless you Lord. Amen.”

Wiped Out

“When his breath leaves him, he returns to his earth; in that very day his [previous] thoughts, plans, and purposes perish.” Psalm 146: 4 AMP

It takes just one moment for everything we have planned, purposed and done in life to be wiped out. In that one moment when one breath fails to follow another, everything stops.

We need to be aware of where our life is going? We need to be aware of what we are doing to ourselves? Are we living our life in a way that matters to God?

All our well thought of, well laid plans will perish. That is a certainty. However, there is a kind of life that can bless us even after our death on earth. It is a life that is lived in obedience to God. It is a life fortified with good works that glorify God. The Word says that the good work we do will follow us to heaven.

How much of good work have we done? Do we need to change our lives to make them more pleasing to God?

If you had to learn that you have very little time left on earth, what would you do to make your life count?

Prayer:
Dear Jesus, I am sorry I didn’t take my life seriously thus far. I want to live a meaningful and good life. Help me to live a life that is pleasing to You, Amen.

Do not be alarmed

Overhearing but ignoring what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be seized with alarm and struck with fear; only keep on believing.” ~ Mark 5:36

The circumstances told a tale of despair, loss and complete sorrow. Jairus, the ruler of the synagogue and his family lamented the death of their daughter. He had sent for Jesus to heal her but He was too late. Jesus came nevertheless.

When Jesus entered the house, He said, “Do not be seized with alarm, just keep believing.” He told them not to cry. He said, ‘This little girl is not dead but is sleeping.’ Those around Him laughed at Him, but He ignored them.

He sent the others away and then took the girl’s father and mother into the room where she lay. Holding her hand Jesus said to her, ‘Little girl, arise from your sleep!’ Instantly the girl got up and started walking around.

Are the circumstances in your life the opposite of what God told you it would be? Are you praying about something that seems to have gone against you? Remember if Jesus could raise the dead little girl to life, He can do the impossible. All you need to do is ‘believe’.

Do you believe that Jesus can do the impossible? If you believe, you will see your miracle too!

Prayer:
Dear Jesus, I bring all my difficulties and problems to Your throne of grace. I believe that You can do the impossible, help me Lord! Amen.
