Abundant Life

“….I am come that they might have life and have it abundantly” ~ John 10:10

There’s so much joy and celebration over the birth of a child. Unlike other birthdays, the birth of Jesus was unique and witnessed heavenly celebration. For Jesus came into this world to bring us joy, hope and eternal encouragement through the abundant life found in Him alone. Hence Christmas is the celebration of the birth of eternal hope and encouragement. It’s a celebration of the joy that overflows from the abundant life Jesus promises in John 10:10.

Abundant life…..what is this abundant life? It doesn’t mean living long or having an abundance of things. It means living life with a purpose…..a God set, God designed purpose. And it is from this purpose that I draw my identity; it tells me who I am, to whom I belong. It gives me the true sense of fulfillment and satisfaction; it gives me the reason to hope and not give up and most of all it reminds me that I’m not forgotten by God but that God counts on me. And when I live out God’s purpose, the eternal hope, encouragement and joy are mine.

Mary and Joseph were just common folk. Their lives did not see an upward mobility in status nor did they get an abundance of material blessings or good luck because of Jesus. But they experienced hope and joy at the birth of Jesus; the hope of eternal life and joy of salvation. They lived out God’s purpose.

Prayer
“Dear Jesus, I believe that eternal joy, encouragement and hope are found in You alone. Thank you Lord. Help me live out Your purposes. Amen,”

Restoring the Fortunes

‘For I will restore their fortunes and have compassion on them’ ~ Jeremiah 33:26

Throughout the history of the nation of Israel, we find a common phenomena. Whenever they disobeyed God, forsaking his ways and laws, they were invaded by ruthless armies from the surrounding nations. There was destruction on every front. Scores of people were mercilessly killed, livestock and cattle was ravaged, flora and fauna was rampaged, gold, silver and other precious articles from the temple were taken away. Above all these, the joy and peace of the people was stolen. Grief and mourning prevailed.

God forewarned them of such devastation through his prophets who at times spoke severe words  pointing out to the wrath of God who set about to discipline the chosen nation. But God also spoke words of comfort and assurance that he would avenge the enemies of Israel who went too far in plundering Israel. God promised prosperity and favour: streets will again be filled with children playing; each man siting under his own vine and fig tree; gold, silver and precious articles of the temple will be restored; the land will yield its harvest and the sound of music and singing will fill the air. Above all these, the joy, peace and glory of Israel – who is the LORD himself – will return.

God’s love for his own is such that though he chastises us, he longs to see the fortunes, the fortunes of Christ restored in our lives. What ‘fortunes of Christ’ need to be restored in your life? Has sin dampened the joy and fervor of serving Christ? Has the enemy of your soul stolen the peace of God that makes you trust him? Has worry and anxiety vexed your heart and mind that you can no longer enjoy sweet fellowship with the LORD?

Trust him my friend. He will restore the fortunes of Christ in your life again. God says, “And this too shall pass….this time of gloom and sorrow….this season of difficulty and troubles….this phase of challenges and trials….and the joy, peace and glory of Christ will certainly come.”

Prayer – “Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you for loving me so much that you want to see me restored with the blessings and the abundant life in Christ Jesus. Forgive me for going astray from you. Help me walk in your way and  live by your words. Amen.”

When troubles double

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature, and complete, not lacking anything.” ~ James 1:2-4

They say troubles come in doubles. Sounds true, isn’t it? There are times when we see troubles coming one after another leaving us feeling exasperated, frustrated and annoyed. Our peace is disturbed and joy is swept away. We become angry, cynical and complain.

The Bible exhorts us to do just the opposite. Consider it a joy. When we look at those troubles through the eyes of faith, believing in God’s goodness, that He is good all the time, we stir up within us patience, endurance, hope and perseverance. The troubles remain the same, but through it all we come out stronger in faith. This faith precipitates joy that is doubled up within fueling the will to carry on. We begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Job, a devout man mentioned in the Bible exhibited this attitude when faced with troubles. In a single day, he lost all his property and children. His enemies suddenly attacked and looted all his oxen, donkeys, and camels. A fire from the sky burned all his sheep. And all his children were killed when the walls of the house crashed on them. But Job expressed sincere faith in God’s goodness. He exclaimed, ‘The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.’

Jesus says in John 16:33, ‘In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.’ We can draw strength from Jesus to not only face but overcome troubles. If you are facing troubles, take heart and cheer up. Things will seem brighter soon. For God is greater than any trouble. He will bring you through, when you trust on Him.

Prayer

“Dear Jesus, it’s so reassuring to know that I can lean on you in the midst of any trouble; that You will take care of it all. Lord, strengthen my faith in You. Amen.”

Filled With Joy

‘And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit’ ~ Acts 13:52

Paul and Barnabas traveled extensively going from place to place visiting the churches and encouraging the believers, both Jews and devout converts to Judaism. In Pisidian Anticoh, after the reading of the law in the synagogue, the rulers sent word saying, “Brothers, if you have a message of encouragement for the people, please speak.”

Paul stood up and explained the entire gospel beginning from the time the Israelites were in Egypt upto resurrection of Christ. Many truths were explained so that they could grasp the magnanimous salvation plan of God who worked it out through centuries and decades. He explained the significance of the resurrection, telling that only through Jesus was the forgiveness of sins possible. Going further he warned them not to reject the gospel and incur trouble on themselves as happened in the past to their forefathers. Deeply moved by the message, the people asked them to speak the next Sabbath. This time the whole city was gathered to hear the message. But when the Jews saw the crowd, they became jealous and talked abusively against Paul. They stirred up trouble and persecution that made Paul and Barnabas to leave the city. But Paul and his companions were not flustered or embittered by this. On the contrary, they were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

Facing rejection and persecution is not easy, especially when we have undertaken a great deal of effort and personal sacrifice to do something for others benefit. We can behave rudely and with an air of religious superiority. And even force the gospel down on people. But we can also make a choice to stay joyful in the midst of persecution and trust God to deal with the situation. When we lean on the Holy Spirit and allow him to be incharge even over our natural selves, he will help us respond in a way that honours God.

If you’ve been trying to share the gospel and are faced with rejection or abuse, hand it over to the Lord and stay joyful. For God is concerned that you musn’t become bitter and lose the joy of salvation.

Prayer – “Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for being patient and forbearing with me. Help me not to become bitter when I am abused or persecuted for doing your work. May the joy of the Holy Spirit always remain in me. Amen.”
