Evening and Morning

‘God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day’ ~ Genesis 1:5

Ever since time began, the sequence of day and night repeats itself endlessly. God created light and separated the light from the darkness by calling the light ‘day’ and the darkness ‘night’. On the fourth day of creation, he made the solar system and established the sun to govern the day and the moon to govern the night. In this daily succession of sun and moon, God’s faithfulness is manifested, calling for faith in his never changing nature.

Its no small wonder that in our world, above all the marvels that can ever excite man is the sublime beauty and reality of the dawn and dusk. The sun doesn’t suddenly break forth creating a burst of light, though essentially it is a star of gaseous nature. The gleam of dawn glows brighter as myriad hues splash against the blue expanse. At dusk, the amber radiance of the setting sun slowly diminishes, making way for the night to come through, as the moon and stars gently emerge.

It was for no simple reason that God ordained the sequence that way. He knew quite well what it would be like – for the broken  distressed heart to be refreshed with the breaking forth of a new day that heralds a promise, a new beginning, that brings in a fresh outlook to the very same depressing situation of the night gone by; for the soul heavy laden with guilt, all day and no night would make the burden more unbearable, giving no chance to shed a few tears of repentance in the shadows of the nigh; for the one tired from hard labor of raising a family, a time of repose when all the world is asleep at night is such comfort; for the ardent believer, hushed moments of prayer in the early hours of the morn bring strength to face the day as to the sorrowful crushed heart who sleeps away into the night with tear drops trickling unstopped, the night being the only balm to put the anxious soul to rest.

Scripture says – Though sorrow may last for the night, joy comes in the morning; that the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end, they are new every morning. Great is thy faithfulness oh Lord. This is true. Be it the real day and night interplay or the day season and night season of the soul, God is faithful to never leave nor forsake the one who puts his trust in him.

King David testified – ‘By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me’. How thankful we must be for such a loving and wonderful God – a God of the day and the night!

Prayer – “Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for your marvelous creation of day and night. Indeed Lord, no one can match your greatness. You are so thoughtful. Its so wonderful to have you in my life. Amen.”
