Respecting God

‘You shall have no other gods before me.’ ~ Exodus 20:3

When God gave the Israelites, what we commonly call the ‘Ten Commandments’  he began with ‘You shall have no other gods before me’ followed by ‘You shall not make for yourself any graven image’, ‘You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain’, ‘Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy’, ‘Honour your father and mother’, ‘You shall not murder’, ‘You shall not commit adultery’, ‘You shall not steal’, ‘You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour’, ‘You shall not covet’ The first three pertain to showing respect to God. The fourth commandment teaches us to observe the day od rest when no regular work is done. The remaining commandments were given to govern private and social life.

There is a priority in these commandments. He clearly indicated that God would have to take the first place above all other things. Respecting God was very important. And this influenced how other people and things would be treated. No doubt, our attitude to towards God influences our attitude towards others. For when we respect God and hold his ideals in high esteem, we will naturally follow his way of dealing with people and things. Others are treated with respect. Their relationships and possessions are treated with respect. So our relationship with God becomes the center-point from which other things flow.

Respect for God is the main ideal that gives rise to other ideals we are supposed to adhere to. But is that true of our lives? Do we really respect our neighbours possessions and make effort not to spoil or destroy them? Do we cease from coveting what our neighbour has? Do we really exercise self-control by not spreading slander against someone we are angry about? If God really has the fist place in our lives, then he must rule every other aspect as well.

Lets allow God to take priority in our lives.

Prayer – “Dear Heavenly Father, I bow down to you and worship you alone. Truly, your word enlightens me. Help me to follow your word and let your word have precedence over every aspect of my life. Amen.”
