Losing Your Moral Ground

‘…just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all that you do’ ~ 1 Peter 1:15

After the fatal fall when David sinned againist God by committing adultery with Bathsheba, God pronounced severe consequences resulting in drastic changes in his life. The home scene took a complete chnage. Things were different now. It seems as if Joab was actually steering David’s life to some extent. Joab is found calling the shot as to what David must do to patch up with his estranged son  Absalom. Now Absalom killed Amnon for his misbehaviour with his half sister Tamar. We don’t find David ever confronting Amnon about this. For two whole years, Absalom nursed a secret revenge and had its way by killing Amnon. Absalom fled and lived in Geshur, away from David for three years. David longed to see him but never made any attempt to meet him or have him called back though he was consoled about Amnon’s death. It was  Joab again who masterminded the plot to bring back Absalom. Here again David yields unto Joab’s plan and allows Absalom to return to the kingdom, but on the condition that he must live in his own house and not see the face of the king. Absalom lived upto two years without seeing the face of his father. Probably David lost the moral strength and courage to reprimand his own children’s behaviour.

No doubt, the sin we commit affects us on the inside. It leaves a stinging pain that gnaws and we feel less able to correct similar behaviour and their manifestations in the lives of others. Staying morally correct is cruccial especially if we have children, who invariably look up to parents and elders. Our moral character influences theirs. Great care must be given to wacth every step so that we don’t loose moral ground.

Prayer – “Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for showing me the path of life. Forgive me when I  fail to bear testimony of your ways before those whom you have placed in my life. Help me to live up to the ideals you have shown me. Amen.”
