Little Flock

‘Do not be afraid little flock for the Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom’~ Luke 12:32

A large crowd of many thousands had gathered and Jesus spoke words of warning and encouragement to his disciples. He affectionately and lovingly called them ‘little flock’ saying that the Father has been pleased to give them the kingdom. Out of so many Jews, they were chosen to be among the close circle and get opportunities to travel and move around with Jesus and listen to him directly. They were taught how to pray. Words of wisdom and salvation were spoken to them. Authority to win over the power of the enemy was given to them. As Jesus said the secrets of the kindgom of God were given to them. No other group moved as close to the Saviour as they. They had a unique intimate relationship with Jesus.

Peter was one of the three who formed the inner circle. Jesus said of him – “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 16:18,19). But later on after Jesus’ death, we find having got back to fishing. Maybe fear and disillusionment took over and made him look at himslef as just an ordinary fisherman, than as one endowed with the power of the gospel. When Jesus appeared after having risen from the dead, he reinstated Peter saying, ‘Simon, so of Jonah, feed my sheep’ From being one among the flock, he had to shepherd those who were yet to experience salvation.

You and I have been given the words of wisdom and salvation. We have been endowed with  authority to win over the power of the enemy by faith in the work of Christ on the cross. Yet at times, we tend to give up when fear, discouragement and disillusionment set in. We may think we are of no use, we are inadequate to meet the task and that the task ahead is too big. But the resurrected Christ is with us to cheer us on and help us accomplish this mission. For he has promised, ‘Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you’.

Prayer – “Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for depositing me with your words of wisdom and salvation. Help me be a good steward of this gift and use it to rescue others from darkness. Help me be faithful to the task you have given me. Amen.”
