But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. Matt 5:44
This is something difficult isn’t it! Loving someone who love us itself is not that easy, this commandment is something opposite but my dear not difficult.
The Bible tells us to turn our right cheek to them that strike us on the left, but instead we are ready to strike them back ten times. If I don’t give a similar reaction then the person on the other end, would surely take advantage of me, if I keep letting him/her hurt me.
We come across times in our lives, where we encounter mistreatment, jealousy, hostility, hatred from those who seem to be against us. We may have been abused and treated with cruelty. At times, even the very people we trust seem to let us down. Some people may scheme to see that we don’t get the promotion, the benefit or the recognition that we have worked for. How should we respond? The natural response is to take revenge, or fight it out. But the Bible encourage us to go the opposite way – to love our enemies, to do good to those who hate us, to bless those who curse us, to pray for those who mistreat us.
We have no control over what happens to us, but we can choose how to respond. When we choose to respond in love and forgiveness, we reap a harvest of blessings. We ought always to practice forgiveness, keeping in mind, only if we forgive the petty sins of people around us, will we able to obtain forgiveness from God for the small and big sins we commit. Yes this is give and take, the moment we extend forgiveness we would feel light and at the same time enjoy great peace as our sins would have been forgiven.
As we all know, Jesus came on this earth and lived like you and me, went through severe pain and suffering but still from the cross He cried out, ‘Father forgive them for they know not what they are doing’. Even we ought to have the same kind of attitude towards those who persecute us, its true that we are not as great as Jesus but we can ask Him to help us be like Him.
“Dear Jesus, Thank You for the love and forgiveness You have shown me. Please help me show the same love and forgiveness to those who seem to do wrong things toward me. Amen.”
