“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” ~ John 3:8
One afternoon, while walking about and praying on the terrace of Simon the tanner’s house, a strange vision unfolded before his eyes. A large sheet was lowered with its four corners from heaven and Peter saw all different kinds of four-footed animals and birds and reptiles. Then a voice said, “Arise Peter, kill and eat”. He replied, “Surely not Lord. I have not eaten anything unclean”. “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean” came the reply from heaven. This happened thrice.
The Spirit of God was pointing in a new direction. But the disciple Peter took quite some time to understand this. All along, Peter was strictly following the Jewish customs and regulations of not associating with gentiles, the non Jewish people. But God was working in a new way. Unknown to Peter, the centurion Cornelius was being prepared to experience salvation. In another dream God told Cornelius that he wold have to call for Peter to come to his house and explain the word of God.
So immediately, in devout faith and obedience, Cornelius sent his trusted soldier to fetch Peter. And here, on the terrace, God gives a vision for Peter to help prepare him for this change of perspective and beliefs.
The new covenant of grace brought forth a assimilation of all people groups under the banner of God’s redeeming love. For Christ died for all. Whosoever believes in him will be saved. Whosoever…..anyone and everyone. This was a paradigm shift for the early church that for years was following the traditions handed down by their forefathers. And here God was nudging then to move into the new dimension. Jesus gave the commission, “Go and make disciples of all nations,…”
In his analogy, Christ says that the wind blows wherever it pleases. One cannot tell from where it comes and where it goes. So is the way of the Spirit of God. God’s ways and thoughts are higher than ours. He longs that everyone must come to repentance and have eternal life. But how can this happen when you and I are closed to the new workings of God? How do we respond when God moves in way we don’t like or prefer, especially when he’s calling us to make some fundamental changes in our perceptions and understanding of others? May we treat others the way God treats us. When we truly follow the leading of the Spirit of God, we are truly following Christ.
Prayer – “Dear Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I’ve been uncooperative to the leading of your Holy Spirit. Help me treat others the way you treat me. Help me reflect your likeness and be a true follower of you.” Amen.
