“A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.”~ Proverbs 28:20
Many aspirations lay in Gehazi’s heart. Probably he had a huge list of what he’s been wishing for all his life. He wanted to get rich. The moment of his life seemed to come. He secretly slipped away from his master’s presence, ran after Naaman’s chariots and told lies that his master Elisha had wanted some silver and clothing. He took and hid these in his house and then appeared before his master acting as if nothing had happened. He seemed to have achieved what he wanted….but it didn’t last very long. For just a few moments later, Gehazi faced the consequence of his doings – he became a leper.
He was in a haste to get rich….to get rich by dubious means. He was in such a haste he never gave a thought to what he was about to do. Gehazi got what he wanted but could not enjoy them.
Sometimes we can find ourselves in Gehazi’s shoes when we are not careful to correct our ways. We may think we are being smart by cheating on taxes, paying bribes, flicking some small amounts here and there, writing false vouchers, and changing account statements. But such doings will ultimately lead to destruction. The Bible says in 1 Timothy 6:6 – ‘But godliness with contentment is great gain.’ Let’s be content with what we have and if we need something, let’s get it through honest means and not through shortcut methods.
“Dear Jesus, I believe You are my provider. Help me not to get hasty in getting rich but be content with what You’ve given me. Keep me from doing wrong. Amen.”
Haste leads to waste
