Knowing God Through Silence

‘He says, “Be still, and know that I am God‘ ~ Psalm 46:10

Moses experienced God in a very unusual way. Through silence. He had to teach his soul how to be still and know that God is God, was God and will be God. For forty years in the desert, he took care of sheep. The former prince of Egypt was now a shepherd. In the vast expanse of the desert, surrounded by gigantic mountains and howling desert winds, he must have wondered how his life had changed. Well, wasn’t God in-charge over his destiny? Then why did things happen the way they did? Question after question must have bombarded his mind, with his heart seeking for an answer. But there was none. All that was there was only silence and the bleating of sheep that reminded him of his present situation. But through those moments of silence, when God seemed to have withdrawn himself, Moses got his faith strengthened and his sight more focused.

Dear friend, let me encourage you to have faith in God, and believe that he is good regardless  of whether you understand or not. There are times when God will not answer. As much as he is a God who is merciful, gracious and loving, he is also sovereign and at times chooses to say nothing, only to strengthen your faith and make your love for him strong. Getting answers to our life’s perplexities, troubles and problems is no assurance that we can live and face life better than before. For if we live, we live not by answers, but because of who God is.

In Psalm 46, we read of earthquakes, storms, wars and destruction. But only one important thing is told to us – “Be still and know he is God’ Have faith and don’t give up on God. He is God.

Prayer – “Dear Heavenly Father, forgive me when I become angry at you for not answering me or working things out as I want. Lord, strengthen me to grow close to you and love you more even through the still moments of life. Amen.”
