Honouring God

‘You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power…’ ~ Revelation 4:11

Honouring God is most important above other things. God is worthy of honour and we his children are to do so. Eli failed to honour God. He was fully aware of the sin committed by Hophni and Phinehas. They were eating the fat portions of a sacrifice even before it was burned up as an offering unto God. God sends a man with a message to Eli who said, “Why do you scorn my sacrifice and offering that I prescribed  for my dwelling? Why do you honour your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?”

To the ordinary eye it may never seem as a sin but rather something quite natural. But in God’s eyes, they were dishonouring him. They were putting themselves before God and taking what should be given to him. And Eli who knew about this did not restrain his sons from doing it. He participated in it, eating the fat portion to such an extreme that he gradually grew fat and could not stand, but had to either sit down on the stool or lie down in his usual place. This resulted in careless attitude. As a result, God dealt severely with Eli and his family line – all his descendants will die in the prime of life.

Failure to honour God can cost us a heavy price. We can honour God in many ways. The scriptures clearly indicate how to do so. Offering our tithes and first fruits of our wealth (Proverbs 3:9), respecting each other in our relationships at home and work (Ephesians 5&6); setting aside time for prayer and studying God’s word (Joshua 1:8); helping the needy (Psalm 82:3,4; speaking only what benefits others (Ephesians 4:29); giving God the first place above all (The Ten Commandments – Exodus 20); adopting the the Royal Law – Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength and love your neighbour as yourself (Mark 12:29-31) are some pointers that show the way.

Lets be careful not to miss out on doing that which truly honours God, for he is worthy of it.

Prayer – “Dear Heavenly Father, forgive me when I have been disrespectful towards you. Thank you for teaching me the way of life. Help me walk in your ways give you the honour you deserve. Amen.”
