‘You did not choose me but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit – fruit that will last’ ~ John 15:16
When Jesus came into the world to save sinners, he did not come with great pomp and show. He did not come in his heavenly glory but rather as a little baby and was born in a humble manger. He grew up as a carpenter’s son, just as an ordinary person. He never claimed any titles until he was baptised at River Jordan by John the Baptist. Neither did he take upon himself the glory of becoming a high priest. Hebrews chapter 5 records that no one can take this honour upon himslef, but must be called by God. And God called Jesus to take on this role because he submitted reverenlty to the Father’s will and learned obedience from what he suffered.
When God calls us to serve him, we have to be ready to lay aside any personal rights we may claim to have, deny ourselves and take up our cross and follow Him. We may not fully understand why God puts us in humble circumstances and brings forth a humble beginning. All we need to do is to follow Christ’s example who learned obedience from what he suffered.
At the baptism, the Heavenly Father expressed his affirmation – “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” May this be said of us too.
Prayer – “Dear Heavenly Father, forgive me when I am all too concerned about acheiving my goals and aspirations and leaving yours undone. Help Lord to take on the form of a servant as Jesus your Son did and serve wherever you call me. Amen.”
