The Mind of Christ

‘In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus..’ ~ Philippians 2:5

Not until recently while sitting in a Bible study class did the truth of this statement dawn so clear before me. Wondering and pursuing to find the true meaning of what it really means to have the ‘mind of Christ’ I pondered on this fabulous unraveling – ‘let the character that was in Christ be in you too’. Adopting the example pointed out in Philippians chapter 2, the oft quoted passage during lent calls for a great degree of surrender.

The teacher shared an insightful illustration.  A lady came sorrowful, complaining to the teacher that some youths sitting a few pews ahead of her were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues while she though being a member of the church for many years and inspite of praying for that gift was not blessed. The teacher exhorted her to rejoice that others got it cause if one part of the body of Christ is blessed all are blessed just as if one part of the body of Christ suffers, all suffer. He later instructed her to go home and thank God for his outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the youngsters. She promptly did so and came back reporting that while she was doing so, she herself was blessed with that gift!

What a marvelous revelation. The mind of Christ rejoices when others are blessed, it celebrates when others celebrate, it mourns when others mourn, it grieves over what grieves the other person, it considers others loss as its own, it perseveres in faith when others are trying hard to believe, it stands by supporting the weak and frail, it waits in prayer for the fulfillment of other person’s desire, it ensures that others are benefited, it congratulates when others achieve, it cheers when others are pressing hard, it exults when others are rewarded.

I asked myself, can I follow the example of Christ this way? Can I really rejoice when I see others being blessed materially, financially and even spiritually? It is possible when I depend on Christ to strengthen me. Would you consider asking yourself too?

Prayer – “Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of the mind of Christ made possible by your grace and love to me. Strengthen my heart to follow your word by yielding to your Spirit’ work in my inner being. Help me truly live for you. Amen.”
