Wisdom that can be felt

“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.” ~ James 3:13

There are so many things we do to gather knowledge. We read up a lot of books with knowledge, scientific journals, and what not. We get knowledgeable but not wise. Getting good grades, securing a rank, passing out of prestigious colleges, getting distinctions and medals is normally thought of being wise. But what is true wisdom?

Today’s verse for meditation tells us that the evidence of true wisdom is deeds done in humility that help develop a good life. James 3:17 describes wisdom as – “But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.” These qualities are not picked up by just reading through books but by exercising humility in our behaviour and attitudes towards others – how we look at others, how we treat them, how we deal with them.

True wisdom is reflected in our behavior and attitude towards others be it family members, neighbours, colleagues, friends, staff at office, or even servants at home. When our motives are pure, when we are peace loving instead of throwing up a fight, when we don’t look down on others, when we are not hypocritical but sincere, when we are forgiving and generous…..that’s when true wisdom is revealed in us, wisdom that can be felt. For true wisdom lies beyond the math or letter. It lies in the posture of humility.

Prayer

“Dear Jesus, help me be pure, peace loving, considerate, merciful, impartial, sincere and submissive. May I always take the posture of humility. Amen.”
