‘Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen’ ~ Ephesians 4:29
It is said that man speaks about twenty thousand words in a day, while a woman speaks about thirty thousand words in a day. And that with the number of words we speak in a year, sixty-six books can be written; each book containing eight hundred pages. Whew…..that’s really a whole lot of words!
From the time we wake up until we sleep, we are communicating in some way or the other. Exchange of words is an everyday feature of our lives. Not a day goes by without a word being spoken. In the constant exchange of words, sometimes a foul word, a swearing word, a hurting word, a discouraging word, a humiliating word, a hasty word, an exaggeration, a lie or just a careless word can just slip out of the mouth. Such words cause more damage than good. The Bible says in Matthew 12:36 that men will have to give account on the Day of Judgment for every careless word they have spoken.
Today’s verse for meditation exhorts us to speak words that encourage, comfort, lift up, strengthen, enliven, stir up hope, bring joy or just a smile across a face. Speech is a gift given by God. Not all people enjoy this unique ability to express or communicate through speech. This gift must be treated with care and wisdom. For words are powerful. They can either break or make a person.
‘Heavenly Father, I thank you for the gift of speech You have given me. Forgive me for abusing it. From now onwards, may what I speak be pleasing to You and those who hear. In Jesus Name, Amen’.
Be careful little mouth what you speak
