The Shade

‘the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. ‘ ~ Psalm 121:5,6

If you happen to be in the Middle Eastern environment, out in the open desert, you can expect yourself to be called upon to face the harsh heat and the violent dust storms that ravage the habitat. In a treeless land all you can do is seek shelter of a rock or crag whose shade provides some comfort and protection.

In the Bible, God is spoken of as being a ‘rock’ – strong, dependable and magnanimous. We can run to him and seek help. When we find ourselves face-to-face with overwhelming troubles and difficulties, we can call upon his Name which is a tower of refuge and strength. We also find the imagery of a mother hen who lovingly huddles her young ones under the safe covering of her wings whenever the enemy stalks. God is like that. He lovingly huddles us under the shadow of his wings. He stands beside us and fights the enemy that stalks our lives. His shadow falls over us, the shade at our right hand, covering us under the protection of his wings. He is our protection against the things that distress and threaten us. He not only watches over the daily routine of our lives, but even when  life throws unexpected challenges and setbacks. In the normal days and ordinary moments he watches over us, as well when emergencies arise. God watches over our movements – night and day. He keeps a careful watch over the associations we make, the acquaintances we acquire, the friendships we develop, the relationships we nurture so that he can protect us from those who may intend to harm us and things that may prove harmful in the future which only he can perceive.

But this can happen only when we lift up our eyes to the Lord – when we depend on him, trust in him. When we surrender our lives to God completely, he comes alongside us. He never fails in protecting us, as the Bible says, ‘He who watches over you will not slumber, Indeed he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.’

Surely we can never do without such loving care. God alone is our refuge and strength. He alone can keep our foot from slipping.

Prayer – “Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the loving protection you give me. Thank you for keeping watch over my life and keeping my foot from slipping. Help me Lord, to always look up to you as my refuge and strength. Amen.”
