Overlooking offence

“A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.” ~ Proverbs 19:11

He never expected this. It came as a bolt from the blue. David was fleeing from Jerusalem and continued along the road while Shimei was going along the hillside opposite David, cursing and throwing stones at him and showering him with dirt. It must have been painful, embarrassing and humiliating to David, especially with all the servants, people and mighty men accompanying him. Interestingly David did not react in anger or revenge. He did not consent to his army commander’s advice of finishing Shimei off. Instead he stayed calm and walked on. He believed that God was watching and knew what to do. He allowed God to be sovereign over this situation. He did not take matters in his own hands but did what would be right in God’s eyes – overlooking the offence.

Let’s put ourselves in David’s shoes. We don’t like to be embarrassed or humiliated, especially in the presence of others. It’s shameful and hurting to the ego. How would we react when someone abuses us or offends us? Do we stare….give hard looks…or shout back abusive words at the slightest provocation?

Proverbs 24:29 says, ‘Do not say, “I’ll do to him as he has done to me; I’ll pay that man back for what he did.” Infact, going further, Proverbs 25:21-22 says, ‘If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you.” Reacting in love and forgiveness wins God’s favor and blessings. When we forgive others we pave the way of forgiveness for ourselves. Though it may appear as foolishness to the world, such a reaction is pleasing in God’s eyes and will be rewarded. And the reward from God far outweighs the treasures the world can ever offer.

Prayer- “Dear Jesus, thank you for teaching me the right way to godliness. Thank you for forgiving my offences. Help me be forgiving towards others. Amen.” Those who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.
