Pleased but not Thankful

And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God – Luke 17:15

Their cry for mercy was answered. Jesus spoke the word and the process of healing had already begun. For while they were going on the way to show themselves to the priests, they were cleansed. But only one leper, a Samaritan saw what had happened to him and ‘turned back’, fell down at the feet of Jesus and gave thanks. He took time to thank Jesus while the other nine were all so excited and in such a hurry to get to the priests as fast as possible. They did not even hear the loud voice of the leper who returned to thank Jesus nor notice him missing from their company. They were so happy with the answer to their prayer that they forgot all about the person who answered it.

Often we find ourselves behaving like those nine lepers. We are so pleased with the answer Jesus gives to our petitions, for the miracle He works, for the deliverance He gives, for the breakthrough He brings that we forget to thank Him at that moment. We are so pleased with the way He worked things out but not thankful enough to stop a say a prayer of thanks. We are so preoccupied by the gift, so eager to unwrap the gift than to thank the Giver. Is our hearts so taken away by the things Jesus does for us than for who He is and has been?  Is this true of you, dear friend? If so, stop a while; ponder this day over the wondrous things Jesus has done for you….take time to thank Him not just for what He has done but for who He is to you.

Prayer Lord, I want to thank you for all you’ve done in my life, for the times you heard my cry and helped me. But above all I want to thank you Lord for who you are to me.  Forgive me for not being as thankful as I should have been. Lord, create within me a heart of thankfulness – always. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.  Gratitude is an attitude. Cultivate it.
