Wash Your Clothes

‘Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city‘ ~ Revelation 22:14

On the third month after the Israelites came out of Egypt, they came to the Desert of Sinai and camped there in front of the mountain. The Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes and be ready on the third day, because on that day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people.” Interesting that in a desert they had to wash clothes. Meeting with God required consecration, being set apart from the ordinary. From where did they get water to was their clothes? God provided them water in desert. God made provision for a seemingly impossible need.

Providing water is no difficult task for God who is he maker of heaven and earth. He has made provision for the greatest need of man – salvation. God gave his only Son, Jesus Christ for the propitiation of our sins. Christ’s blood shed on the cross makes atonement for us. We can wash our guilt stained spiritual garbs in his blood that cleanses us and makes us whole. Then we can enjoy close fellowship with God. King David cried out to Gd when he was confounded by his sin, ‘Wash me and I will be whiter than snow.’ Jeremiah exhorted the people, ‘Wash the evil from your heart’ In Revelation 22, the angel says, ‘Blessed are those who wash their robes that they may have right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city.’

When we believe in what Christ has done on the cross for us, we enter into a new life, washed and wholesome. Our sins are washed away. The guilt and condemnation, the shame and regret is all dealt with on the cross. All we have to do is believe that Jesus died on the cross in our place.

Lets take time to ponder how are we going to spend eternity and get our robes ready.

Prayer – “Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of salvation and the provision you have so wonderfully made that I can wash and be cleansed and whole. Thank you for the eternity you have prepared for me. May I walk this earthly life in a way that honours you. Amen.”
