Set Free Eternally

‘Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest‘ ~ Hebrews 3:1

The nation of Israel had been through a long journey from nomadic tribal groups to becoming a organised society dwelling in villages and cities. God instituted a law by which an innocent person can escape revenge from the blood avenger by seeking shelter in the city of refuge nearest to his town and thereby get a chance to stand trial before the assembly. Numbers 35:28 records – ‘The accused must stay in the city of refuge until the death of the high priest; only after the death of the high priest may they return to their own property.’

The death of the high priest held great significance in the Israelite society. For during that year of his death, anyone who has committed an offence by accidentally murdering a person and has fled to a city of refuge, can now become a free individual. He can get back to his own family and previous lifestyle, as a normal member of society.

In the Bible we read that Christ took the form of flesh and blood, inorder to take up the role of a High Priest for our sake. ‘For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.’ (Hebrews 2:17). Christ made atonement for our sins and even gave himself up as the sacrifice on the cross. As a true high priest, he brought true liberty for us, separating us from the burden of our sins. Not only that, he also rose from the dead! What a great triumph. What a great liberation, that we are not just set free for this life, but for eternity to come. No wonder king David said, ‘You are my hiding place. I take refuge in you’

Prayer – “Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for giving me the gift of salvation through Jesus. Thank  you Lord Jesus for being my high priest and giving up your life so that I could receive new life. I worship you.  Amen.”
