Be not weary in doing good

There are times when we despair of having done something good simply because the person that we did it for did something to hurt us or pretended that we hadn’t done anything at all or because everything that we did fell apart and created problems for us. At such times we feel like holding our head in our hands and promising ourselves – ‘Never again!’ The Lord knows what we go through but His advice to us is ‘do not be weary in well doing’ If it was someone else who said that we would have told them to get lost and mind their own business. But when it comes from Jesus, who died on the cross for our sins, was humiliated and betrayed for doing good… we realize that there is something much deeper about being good that we need to keep our eyes on. We need to examine why we are being good, is it because we are expecting the other person to return a favor, for good things to be said about us, to bring about a change for the better or simply because it is the loving thing to do.

Jesus said “Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. When you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:1,3, 4

When the Father sees what we have done without expecting anything in return He rewards us. So we can rest assured that the good deeds we do even though they are not appreciated or reciprocated well by others, they have been seen by God. We will receive His blessings for doing what is good, loving and pleasing in His sight.

Lord, help me to keep our sights focused on You. Even at times when others don’t appreciate the good I do, help me to keep doing what is good, loving and will bring glory to Your name. Help me to make a difference for your Kingdom, Amen.
