Knowing for sure
‘When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, ‘Surely he was the Son of God.’ ~ Matthew 27: 54
The Scriptures foretold it for centuries, the acts and words of Jesus testified to the truth yet no one believed. Even those who vouched to stand by Him through thick and thin deserted Him at the time of His need. He went through the worst… alone.
Finally when the hour had come, Jesus gave up His spirit at the cross, the most complete sacrifice on behalf of us wayward and unbelieving children of God. As He did so, the earth shook, the rocks split and curtain of the temple was torn in two… Seeing all the signs those who looked down on Him a while ago had to exclaim, ‘Surely He was the Son of God!’
Aren’t we also like that. God tells us to have faith and to keep looking at Him for all we need. Yet we don’t we like to look for tell-tale signs that what we want will happen. Just a sign… just a look, a peep into the future and doing so we push aside the way that is pleasing to God.
God says, ‘Have faith’ and we think, ‘I can’t wait’. We push on doing just what we please until something upturns and throws our plans into nothing. Through the confusion and the chaos, one thing is very clear – God was right all the time!
We need to listen to God as He speaks to us through His Word. We need to hear what Jesus is telling us to do by His example and through His voice. If we heed Him in time, we won’t need to have to go through the earthquakes that turn our world around. We will have peace knowing in faith, He does what He said He will do.
Dear Jesus, please forgive me for not heeding Your word and Your voice. Please help me to hold on to You in faith believing that whatever You have said, You will do, Amen.’
