Lamp of the Body
‘The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness…’ ~ Matthew 6:22, 23
Eyes can capture images, pictures, colors, forms, shapes, textures etc. Eyes also have an amazing capacity to contribute to the making of perspectives. Perspectives are shaped to a large extent by what we see; what we focus on. We see something, desire to have it and at times our hearts are so taken by what we see that we cannot be at rest until we have it. Such perspectives exert influence on our behavior and attitude affecting our lifestyle.
The Bible speaks of an evil eye, ‘He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him’ (Proverbs 28:2). The evil eye focuses on hoarding up money and wealth; all effort is centered on getting rich in a hurry through deceitful shortcut methods such as not paying taxes, overcharging customers, claiming false reimbursements etc. The focus on money and wealth, builds a perspective of getting rich in haste. Cheating, deceiving has become an accepted norm of behaviour.
The Bible also speaks of the bountiful eye, ‘He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor’ (Proverbs 22:9). A ‘bountiful eye’ is one that shows mercy, kindness, compassion and is generous. The ‘bountiful eye’ focuses on helping the poor and needy. The focus is on helping others than on self-gratification. It helps to develop an attitude of sharing.
We can reap a harvest of good things if we focus on the right things for as the Bible says the attitude of generosity will reap blessings. But if we focus on the wrong things, we can lose out on a lot of blessings.
“Heavenly Father, I thank you for giving me eyes that see. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word. Give me the blessing of a bountiful eye. In Jesus Name, Amen”.
