Being pruned

“…..every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.” ~ John 15:2

Various procedures are adopted to make plants yield more fruit. One such procedure is the process of pruning where the plant is trimmed so that it can grow better and produce more fruit. The Bible portrays us as plantings of the Lord and God as the gardener. God desires that we bear much fruit. And in loving care God takes us through seasons of pruning.

From life’s crucible, realities such as a debilitating illness, a financial crunch, a difficult boss to work under, tough situations at work with hostile colleagues, unexpected expenditures, a long period of waiting for a desire to be fulfilled, a delayed promotion, no increment, an irritating neighbour or pressing needs pervade our lives. Through them God prunes us, He cleanses us. God cleanses us of greed, selfishness, pride, arrogance, stubbornness, wrong motives, jealousy, envy, self-centeredness and the like. These hinder our growth and fruitfulness. They hamper the development of a good character within us.

Pruning is a painful process. If only the plants could speak, they would probably cry out, ‘Ouch…Please don’t do that. It hurts me. Can’t you see? And why should I go through all this pruning…I am bearing fruit anyway, isn’t it?’ We may want to respond the same way. But if only we understand the end result, trusting that whatever God does is always for our good, we can hold on and stay rooted in God’s goodness.

Dear Friend, if you are going through a time of pruning, take it easy, don’t allow depression get you. Trust God’s goodness to work out everything for good. Your life is in God’s hands.

“Dear Jesus, I surrender to Your working in my life. I believe You always work for my good. Work on dear Lord. May I bear good fruit. Amen.”
