A Higher Calling

A Higher Calling

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD ~ Isaiah 55:8

The Midianites had ruined their crops, destroyed all livestock; their sheep, cattle and donkeys, they did not spare a living thing for Israel, they invaded the land and ravaged it. But Gideon did some smart thinking. He thought of an alternative of threshing wheat in the wine press to keep it from the Midianites. So he set about working on this brilliant idea. His busy work was interrupted by an unusual visitor. An angel brought a special message for him. God had chosen Gideon to deliver the Israelites out of the oppression of the Midianites.

But Gideon replied, “How can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.” Gideon saw himself to be poor, incapable, not good enough, insignificant and not equipped. He was afraid and hesitant. He thought he didn’t fit the bill! But God thought otherwise.

God sometimes disrupts our plans and cuts through our personal agendas. He calls us to a higher calling, to fulfill something beyond our natural strength. God interrupts into our plans to bring about His plans to fulfillment. This may include moving out to a new town, taking up a new course to equip oneself or God may lead us to a new level of responsibility, leadership, or even to explore a new area of work which falls within His plans for our lives. We tend to feel we are uncalled for; we are not ready yet to move out of our comfort zone; maybe somebody else fits the bill better; we become afraid and hesitant like Gideon. But God encourages us to trust Him that He knows what’s best for us and that His plans are better than our own. When we say ‘yes’ to God and yield to His working, we experience how our obedience and His divine sovereignty intersect bringing about significant contributions to society and the world at large.

Prayer

“Dear Lord, I thank you for the good thoughts You always think toward me. I believe Your plans are better than mine. Help me move out of my comfort zone; to yield fully to Your working. In Jesus Name, Amen.”

God will never lead you where His grace cannot keep you
