Peace and Goodwill

Peace and Goodwill

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace goodwill to toward men” Luke 2:14

On that cold winter night, as they went about their night duty, the shepherds were surprised by the angelic visitation that heralded the birth of Christ. And the angels sang, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace goodwill to all men”. Peace and goodwill – the two most priceless gifts man can ever treasure were heralded by the angels.

Christ was born with a mandate from God – to save the world from sin and condemnation. He was the Savior of the world and came as God’s gift to mankind. And with Him and in Him the peace and goodwill of God is manifested. Christ’s birth does not herald wealth, prosperity or an enhanced lifestyle. Rather ‘peace’, and ‘goodwill toward men’, the shepherds who first got this message, remained as shepherds all through their lives. But they had a great treasure deep down in their heart, the knowledge of having the peace and goodwill of God in the person of Jesus. And this was something they could always fall back on or pull out to hold on to during storms of life.

As you prepare to celebrate Christmas or maybe you’re just a spectator in all these celebrations, may I encourage you to ponder….that the peace and goodwill of God is free for all men, irrespective what our backgrounds are. And they are real too. The angel’s message that rang out from the heavens two thousands years ago, still rings clear to this day. It’s all up to us to believe and draw close to the source of it – Jesus Christ.

Prayer

“Dear Jesus, at your birth, the greatest gifts the world could ever receive were given – peace and goodwill to all men. Thank you Lord. Help me receive them and live by them. Amen.”
