Did you ever see the rays of the morning sun streaming into a room through the a window or other openings? How the tiny specks of dust invisible otherwise seem so visible and clear in the bright light? Sometimes our conscience is like that.
At times we will not feel something is wrong until a later stage when we cannot do anything about it. This is often because we convince ourselves that what we are doing is right. That is why it becomes compulsary to pray and examine ourselves in the pure light of God, with the Holy Spirit’s guidance. When exposed to the bright light of God , all the white lies we tell ourselves suddenly stand out and make us realise our wrongs.
There is a difference between conscience and guilt. Guilt will wear you down and normally leave you helpless while screaming in your ear that you are a sinner, that you don’t deserve anything good.
However , the nearest parallel we can draw of the conscience is that to a compass. This navigation instrument is used to determine direction. The mariner’s compass consists of a magnetic needle freely suspended so that in the the earth’s magnetic field it turns until aligned with the magnetic north and south poles. It doesn’t scream out when the ship is going in the wrong direction, it just indicates the magnetic north and south poles. It is the duty of the one who steers the ship to check the compass regularly and ensure that the ship is on the right path. In the same way , our conscience indicates if what we are doing is right or wrong , but we need to check it regularly to know if we are on the right path in life or not and take necessary action.
Jesus while explaining the true response to the consciene says “ Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.” ( Mathew 5:23-24). It means that when you are truly convicted it shouldn’t matter who is at fault.Your response should be to make ammends. So important is this that, God says the right time for it is ‘NOW’ no matter where you are or what you have to do.
When you listen to your conscience, you are giving God the final say in your life. And when God has the last word, then be rest assured that you have the best world. Listen and respond to God’s leading today.
